Cala Mayor, Mallorca

The little beach town of Cala Mayor is about 10 minutes drive from Palma City, the capital of Mallorca. Here the sun sets at 10pm in the summer, girls tan topless, the Mediterranean feels like a heated pool even at 9pm at night, and everyone is Spanish. Oh so very Spanish. The water is drinkable, but don't...it tastes like soap. The favourite car here could easily be classified as the convertible CitiGolf.

Cala Mayor has one main street where all the shops, cafes, karaoke bars and tattoo parlours are. Cala Mayor cannot really be described as a town filled with many sightseeing possibilities such as museums and architectural wonders. The quaint little blue flag beach is the biggest attraction. Cala Mayor is after all a beach town. If you want to see old style Spanish houses, churches and museums, then you should rather venture into towns such as Petra and Sineu. Unfortunately I cannot testify for this myself, but the pictures in the brochures look magnificent. My hotel, La Playa Calamayor is walking distance from the beach. I can see the ocean from my tiny room and sand is only about 20 metres away.

Everyone is very friendly in this little town. At the airport I experienced an air of hostility when I tried to get when my pre-arranged taxi which didn't show to pick me up, but here the locals are much more cheerful and eager to help out. I have been flying for an entire day, so after sleeping like a dead person until 6pm, I get up, shower and go out in search of dinner. As the sun only sets at 10pm, it still feels like the middle of the day when I eat my hamburger at the Piccadilly Cafe at about 7pm. After this I head down to watch the sun set, but after sitting on the beach for two hours with no sign of a sunset, I head back to the hotel and jump into bed. Still dead tired from the flying, I fall asleep immediately; ready to start my cruise with Laraine.

Next stop: Cannes / Monte Carlo

Seems like a little beach town somewhere in South Africa! It's weird that the sun sets so late. In South Africa the sun sets probably the latest at 20h00 in summer. Geniet jou trip, wag vir die vlg van Monaco en Cannnes. xx
